Betting odds slashed for Michel Barnier to become next European Commission President

Betting markets are indicating increased probabilities of Michel Barnier becoming the next President of the European Commission President with his betting odds being slashed by nearly a third since November 2018, according to bookmaker Ladbrokes.

In November 2018, Mr Barnier had a starting price of 16/1 (5.9% probability of winning) but this has since been cut to 10/1 (9.1%) in mid-January 2019, to 8/1 (11.1%) in early March 2019, and cut again to 6/1 (14.3%) today.

As a result, Ladbrokes have put Mr Barnier in second place behind his EPP colleague Manfred Weber who is at 1/1 (50%) and ahead of the S&D’s Frans Timmermans 8/1 (11.1%) and ALDE’s Margethe Vestager at 10/1 (9.1%).

Whilst Mr Weber is still the firm favourite, according to Ladbrokes, his probability of becoming the next Commission President has decreased by 10% from a starting price of 4/5 (55.6%) in November 2018 to 1/1 (50%) today.
