Sweden: New Draft Law Adopted, Final Vote on 7 June

The Swedish Government has adopted a new draft law ‘A re-regulated gambling market’. The proposal will mean introducing a new gambling act and a licence system: any company operating in the Swedish gambling market must have an authorised licence and operators without a licence will be shut out. The gambling market will be divided up into sectors: a competitive sector, primarily including online gambling and betting; a sector reserved for non-profit purposes, e.g. lotteries and bingo; and a sector reserved for the central government, e.g. state-owned casinos. The draft law will have a final vote in Parliament on 07 June 2018 with the new regulations coming into force on 1 January 2019.

“We welcome the Swedish Government’s proposals to establish a new regulatory framework for online gambling. Opening up the licensing rules will ensure greater consumer choice, increase the tax revenues for the government, and ensure that online gambling activities fall within the protective regulatory framework and compliment public policy goals”, said Maarten Haijer, Secretary General of the EGBA.
